Review: "Zane's Way" by Maggie Casper

Zane's Way (O'Malley Wild, #1)Zane's Way by Maggie Casper
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

There are more ways of cheating than simply having sex outside a committed relationship. If you're in a long-term, monogamous relationship, engage in an online chat with the purpose of finding a sexual partner for your kinky desires and masturbate thinking about that person you met online instead of your significant other, that's cheating - no matter how you justify it.

That's all I have to say.

Review: "Bound by Deception" by Ava March

Bound by Deception (Bound, #1)Bound by Deception by Ava March
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Verrrrry hot story, with likable characters and interesting story. The final confrontation between Oliver and Vincent was well written, emotionally tugging and made me root for a nice HEA. Alas, I had to content myself with a HFN, which was actually fine considering the length of the story and the fact that there's a sequel where, I hope, they'll finally find their HEA.

Now, most of the sexual content (BDSM) of this story is out of my comfort zone and I admit I skimmed through some parts of the love scenes - mainly, when the leather bullwhip made its appearance, ugh. That didn't prevent me from enjoying the read, though. :)

Review: "Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor" by Lisa Kleypas

Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor (Friday Harbor, #1)Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor by Lisa Kleypas
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

2 1/2 stars

It pains me to say this, but I didn't enjoy this read. *ducks rotten tomatoes*

The plot is pretty simple and the book description is good enough to give you the gist of it, so I won't bother with writing a plot summary here. What can I say? I liked the premise of the story, but the book didn't live up to my expectations.

As usual, Ms. Kleypas' writing was solid and made the story flow easily. Her description of Friday Harbor was so charming and vivid that it made me want to move there.

As for the characters, Mark was nice, Maggie was nice, little Holly was nice, Mark's brother Sam was nice... When did "nice" become such a bad thing? :-/

Romance wise, Mark and Maggie's relationship was disappointingly underdeveloped. There was some buildup, but no real "tension". Not even the fact that Mark was involved in a relationship with another woman for the most part of the story or that Maggie was still (sort of) "grieving" over the death of her husband made the story less, well, lukewarm. Then, all of a sudden, Mark was free, Maggie was ready to move on and embrace a new relationship, and they all lived happily ever after... "Rushed" doesn't begin to describe the ending of this book.

I'm a huge fan of Ms. Kleypas' historical books, but I'm not sold to her contemporary's yet. If this is an example of what I should expect from the upcoming books in this series, I don't think I'll be buying them.

Review: "Mistress Christmas" by Lorelei James

Mistress ChristmasMistress Christmas by Lorelei James

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I can always count on Lorelei James to deliver hot, steamy and fun stories. I just wish the cover of this book wasn't so, ugh, tacky. But hey, I've got it as an e-book, so why am I complaining? LOL!

Holly North is a shy accountant who, for reasons I'll never fully understand, agrees to don a dominatrix costume and fill in as Mistress Christmas at Sugar Plums, a "gentleman's" club - aka a high-class strip joint.

Detective Nick West isn't a regular at Sugar Plums - or any other strip joint, for that matter. He's there to take down the famous Mistress Christmas, who alledgedly robbed one of his friends during a lap dance. As his friend was too embarassed to press formal charges, Nick has to work undercover and off the clock, trick Mistress Christmas to give him a lap dance and catch her in the act of trying to rob him too. But one look at her has him doubting his ability to keep his mind - and another very distinct body part - focused on the legal matter at hand.

The attraction between Holly and Nick is immediate and combustible, and they don't take long to act on it. But neither knows who the other truly is, so what will happen when the truth surfaces? Is there any future for a relationship that basically starts with a misunderstanding and is based on deception? Well, this is Romancelandia. Need I say more? ;)

As expected, this was a hot, quick and very entertaining read. Nick and Holly were very likeable and the sexual chemistry between them was great, which always leads to scorching love scenes. On the "negative" side, the setup of the story annoyed me, because I don't think a shy accountant can pass for a seasoned stripper that easily. Anyway, that wasn't "bad" enough to ruin the read. All things considered, this was very good.

Note: The Wild West Boys series is kind of a spin-off of the Rough Riders series - the West "boys" are cousins of the McKay "kinky loonies" - but each series stands on its own and you don't have to read one to follow/appreciate the other.

Review: "Miss January" by Madison Hayes

Miss January (Calendar Girls)Miss January by Madison Hayes

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Nice H/h, even though they were sometimes too quick to jump to conclusions, interesting setup - I really liked the way they "met" and I know what I'll be doing the next time a sexy stranger with a velvet voice dials the wrong number and reaches me - and smoking hawt love scenes. That's what I call good smut! ;)

If you're wondering what Cash looks like, here's a pic that fits him - and the story - perfectly:

Photobucket

Seriously, there's a scene in the book that's exactly like that pic!

Note: After I read this book, I found out that it isn't the first in the series. How come? Isn't January the first month of the year? Darn, my OCD can't process that, LOL!

Review: "The Christmas Tree Bargain" by J.L. Langley

The Christmas Tree Bargain (Ranch Series, #3)The Christmas Tree Bargain by J.L. Langley

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3 1/2 stars

If you've read The Tin Star, like I have, this quickie works as a very nice extra epilogue to that book. Being alreay familiar with Ethan and Jamie, you get to understand their dynamics, why their Christmas tree is so ugly and Ethan's early Christmas gift gets a new meaning. Plus, their dog Fred helping with the Christmas tree decorations makes it all sweeter as you remember how that "tradition" started.

If you haven't read that book, this quickie is nothing more than a steamy m/m sex scene between two "married" men celebrating Christmas.

Review: "Christmas to Remember" by Annie Windsor

Christmas to RememberChristmas to Remember by Annie Windsor

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Are you ready for Christmas yet? If you're not, this quickie might get you in the spirit to celebrate the Holidays.

Being an EC quickie, this was a hot read - of course - but the love scene (yes, singular) didn't take over the sweet, feel-good, Christmas-y theme of the story. I saw the ending coming miles away, but that didn't prevent me from enjoying this read and I finished it with a smile on my face.

Adorable hero + lovely heroine + the magic of Christmas = fun read.

Note: The book description is a bit misleading. The mention of sex toys made me think this quickie would be full of kinky love scenes, but the one love scene featured in the story was almost vanilla. It was hot, but pretty standard for an erotica/romantica read. There was no "backdoor loving", no spanking and no "crazy" sexcapades. Oh, and no sex toys were put to use in the making of this book.

Review: "Kidnapped for Christmas" by Evangeline Anderson

Kidnapped for ChristmasKidnapped for Christmas by Evangeline Anderson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Okay, I'll say it: there was nothing remotely believable in this story, but I liked it. A lot. Yes, I did!

Kyle was yummy, Jillian was very likable and the BDSM play was sexy and as light as a feather... Well, maybe not that light, but there was no humiliation, no torture, no unbearable pain and no heavy spanking with whips, riding crops or paddles. *shudders* Plus, Kyle was a responsible Dom, always attentive to Jillian's reactions to what he did. Jillian never felt unsafe in his hands, and that's what allowed me to relax and enjoy the "show". ;)

The only thing that bothered me was the Big Misunderstanding near the end of the story. Big Misunderstandings are usually designed to create conflict between the H/h and pave the way for the Great Epiphany that makes the H/h realize they are in love. That plot device was completely unnecessary in this story, IMHO. When the Big Mis was thrown into the story, Kyle and Jillian were already ready to take things further and start a relationship, so the conflict only served to annoy me. Ms. Anderson should have used those pages to give us more smut, LOL.

Overall, this was a very fun and hot read. I wouldn't mind being 'napped by Kyle. *lusty grin*

And just so you know:

Ouch

Awww, this was such a cute story! I loved it - and that's all I can say because it's a quickie and I don't want to give away any spoilers. (Yes, Ms. Valentine has managed to include a nice plot twist in this very short story. I must have a look at her backlist. If she's good enough to pull something this good within the word limit of a quickie, imagine what she can do without that constraint.)

Here's Riley (he's a model and this pic has everything to do with the story):

Twenty-six amazing pages filled with emotion. I'm amazed at the impact Ms. Kelley was able to deliver in such a short story. I even cried! Not only once, but twice! Have I mentioned that this story has only twenty-six pages? Fan-tas-tic!

Note: This story is a follow-up to Turn It Up and I highly recommend that you read that book before diving into this little emotional rollercoaster. You won't regret it.

Review: "Hired for her Pleasure"

Hired for Her PleasureHired for Her Pleasure by Bonnie Dee

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

An escort?! As the hero in a romance book? Gasp! Oh Lord, what a jolt in my prudish - yeah, right! ;) - heart...

Monica Brennerman is a twenty-seven-year-old writer who suffers from severe agoraphobia. So severe that she can't even make herself go outdoors in her own backyard. She isn't happy about her situation, but she can't shake herself out of it, no matter how much her mother and sister try to help her. One night, feeling kind of lustful and lonely, she logs on the internet and orders herself an escort - because, you know, there are some things that even the best vibrator can't do. ;)

Twenty-three-year-old Ryan Hayes is a starving college student who desperately needs money to keep his Alzheimer's suffering grandmother in a decent nursing home. He doesn't mind living in a cockroach-infested appartment, but his grandmother deserves the best for all she's done for him since childhood. So what's a boy to do under such circumstance? Become a high-end prostitute, of course!

Ryan's first client turns out to be Monica and they hit it off - on and off the bed - right away. The problem is, neither can forget that they aren't "normal" people having a date, so when the night is over, he leaves without knowing if he'll ever see her again. Oh, she does want to see him again, but she can't afford another date appointment with him... unless she doesn't have to eat everyday and manages to save some extra money. Desperate times call for desperate measures!

As Ryan and Monica meet again and again, their feelings get in the way of their "business transaction" and insecurity enters the picture. Can they get past their personal problems and find a way to be together for good? Grandma still needs care, so it isn't like Ryan can quit his job in a blink of an eye. Is Monica willing to share him with his clients? Hmmm...

I've got to say that when I started reading this book, I thought Ryan would be a "fake" escort whose first client turns out to be the love of his life and he would never have to service any other client. Well, I was wrong and Ms. Dee didn't shy away from describing Ryan's appointments. Let me tell you, he deserved being well paid for some of the stuff his kinky clients asked him to do. Strangely enough, that part of Ryan's life didn't turn me off as I'd expected - probably because Ms. Dee wouldn't stop stating how much he disliked what he did. That was fine at first, but it became too much halfway through the story because it felt like Ms. Dee was trying too hard to make me "forgive" him for being a prostitute. He didn't need to be "forgiven", he needed to get out of it if that bothered him that much.

Monica's agoraphobia was a nice and believable plot device to make me sympathize with her hiring an escort to fulfill her sexual needs. As someone who never left her house, how else was she supposed to find a sex partner, right? ;) Thankfully, that was the only time her disorder played a major role in Ryan and Monica's relationship. He didn't become her ultimate savior, the man who helped her work through her problems and taught her how to find her place in the outside world again. Nope. She managed to work on that without him, with the meddling but loving help of her mother and sister, and I was glad it was done that way. After all, she might be in love with Ryan, but he wasn't the answer to all her problems.

As this is an erotica/romantica novel, let's talk about the sex scenes, shall we? They were hot, diverse and, yes, kinky. There was masturbation, missionary/conventional sex, "backdoor" loving, some D/s play, a rape fantasy scene, ménage... and that's when things got a little too crazy for me. **SPOILER** Even though Monica was the one who wanted to have a ménage session with Ryan and another man, she didn't feel quite at ease when reality hit and Travis, "the other man" Ryan chose for her, started to make his moves on her. Maybe she'd have felt more comfortable if Ryan had arrived with Travis, but he was late and she was left to her own devices. Sensing how jittery she is, Travis offers her some Ecstasy "to loosen her up and enhance her experience that evening" and, instead of "Just Saying No", she takes the small tablet and swallows it with a sip of margarita. Way to go, Monica! That will definitely make you enjoy the ménage better! When Ryan finally arrives, she's higher than a kite and eager to get things started. Intrigued by her behavior, he asks Travis what he's given her. Does Ryan beat the crap out of his co-worker when he learns that Monica has been drugged? No! He chastises Travis very lightly, asks Monica if she's okay and then joins them in all his randy glory, determined to fulfill her ultimate fantasy. Gah! Call me a narrow-minded prude, but I hated how both Monica and Ryan didn't think much of taking drugs like that. At one point, I wasn't sure anymore if Monica knew what she was doing! **END SPOILER**

All things considered, this was still a good read. I like Ms. Dee's writing, the premise of the book and its development were nicely done, the characters (including the secondary ones) were likable and the sex scenes where sizzling hot - minus the one I mentioned in the spoiler above, that is. Do I recommend this bok? Well, if you don't mind being constantly reminded how "saintly" Ryan is and you have no issues regarding what happens between three two and a half consenting adults, I say it's worth giving it a try.

Note: Even though I've mentioned Ryan's and Monica's age in my review, I'm not sure how old they really are because somewhere near the end of the book, Ryan himself says he's six years younger than her. As far I as know, twenty-seven minus twenty-three equals four. I'm not a math genius, but I'm positive about that, LOL.

Review: "His Bare Obsession" by Lacey Thorn

His Bare Obsession (Bare Love, #1)His Bare Obsession by Lacey Thorn

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Here's a quick quizz to help you decide if this book is for you:

1. The night you gave your virginity away, were you able to go for another four rounds with your well-endowned boyfriend without bleeding to death?

2. The morning after, did you two have an epiphany, realize you were in love and start planning the future together?

3. Did you think about your future brother-in-law's sex life when you were introduced to him, just because there was "something dark" in his eyes?

4. That same night, while you and your beloved husband-to be were cuddling in bed, did he reveal all his brother's sexual kinks to you, neverminding that you had just met the guy?

5. If a killer was after you, would you make plans to set yourself as bait without telling your police detective husband-to-be?

If you answered "yes" to all the questions above, you're Moira - the heroine of this book - and you creeped the heck out of me. *shudders*

And if that wasn't enough, this book had some of the strangest dialogues I've ever read. Who talks like that? No one!

Review: "Anastasia's Style" by N.J. Walters

Anastasia's StyleAnastasia's Style by N.J. Walters

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This was a disappointing read, and that's saying something considering it's a short story and all I wanted was a quick and "brainless" read. When it comes to novellas, I have to like the hero and the heroine to enjoy the story because, let's face it, there's hardly any room to develop a top-notch plot.

Unfortunately, that didn't happen here. I didn't particularly like either Mason or Anastasia, and I wanted to shake them for their "stupidity". I mean, they left a silly Big Misunderstanding keep them apart for a whole year only because they couldn't find a way to talk to each other! At one point in the story, Anastasia even told Mason, "What’s even sadder is that if we’d been able to communicate better in the first place, she (Mason's mother) wouldn’t have been able to destroy our marriage." Well, that was sad, indeed. If they knew what the problem was, why didn't they do something to solve it?

The (two) love scenes were hot as expected, but that wasn't enough to bump my rating up to 3 stars. Oh well, at least I didn't waste much time reading this very short story.

Review: "The Gift of Shayla" by N.J. Walters

The Gift of ShaylaThe Gift of Shayla by N.J. Walters

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Before taking my 2-star rating at face value, you should know that I don't like ménage stories. So why have I decided to read this book, since the book blurb and cover make it clear this is a ménage story?!? Well, I don't like pointing the finger at anyone, but this was all Auntee's fault! ;) She thought the M/M angle of the story would be enough to make me overlook the ménage scenario and, to be fair, I thought so too. Sadly, it didn't work quite that way...

Adam Lancaster and Rob McKeith have been best friends since childhood. The problem is, Adam has been in love with Rob for years, but he's never acted on it because Rob has never shown any sexual interest in him (or any other men, for that matter) and Adam is afraid of jeopardizing their friendship. As if that wasn't enough to make Adam's life miserable, he's also attracted to Rob's wife Shayla. Poor Adam! Is he destined to always pretend he isn't jealous of Rob and Shayla's relationship and never let them know about his feelings? Well, it's Christmas Eve, the season of miracles, and Adam is about to get a very special gift from his friends...

I like Ms. Walter's writing style - her Jamesville series is a special favorite of mine - and that was the main reason I read this book despite its premise. As expected, she was very good at showcasing Adam's love for Rob and angst over the situation he was in. I liked him and felt his pain, which surprised me because he was basically the "intruder" in a couple's established, committed relationship and I was prone to disliking him just for that. Good job there, Ms. Walters!

Unfortunately, that was the only saving grace in this book for me. I didn't feel Adam's attraction to Shayla was that strong and his saying that he "loved" her too when they had "the talk" didn't ring true. On Rob's side, his feelings for Adam were a bit confusing and I'm not sure he really knew what he was doing. It was like he was just following Shayla's direction. She was the one pulling all the strings, but she was also the one whose character was less developed in the book. Did she love Rob as much as he loved her? I don't know. Did she love Adam? I don't know. The whole "Shayla thing" was kind of strange to me.

As it was, I finished the book wishing Adam and Rob had gotten rid of Shayla and lived as a M/M couple happily ever after. That might have made me bump my rating up to 3 stars, who knows?

Note: I received this eARC from Carina Press via NetGalley. That had no influence on my review/rating.

Review: "Saving Sarah" by Lacey Thorn

Saving Sarah (Lottery Brides)Saving Sarah by Lacey Thorn

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

2 1/2 stars

So, what do we have here? Sarah - no last name because, really, who cares? - is found in a very compromising situation and has two choices: go to jail or put her name in the bride lottery. She chooses the latter, of course.

(The bride lottery was very common in a west where women were far and few. Often considered the more delicate sex, men had started objecting when women were brought to trial with the intent to serve jail time. All a woman really needed was a firm hand from the man in her life. She couldn’t be held responsible for actions that could have been prevented by the right man. Thus the lottery was created and religiously adhered to in some small western towns. Sarah’s being one of them.)

Luckily for her, the man who "wins" her in the lottery is Deputy Riley James, who happens to be the man of her dreams and, you guessed it, has had the hots for her since forever.

And that's all the plot you'll get from this book, because what follows is one sex scene after another until they confess they love each other and live happily ever after.

As smut goes, this wasn't a bad one. Sarah and Riley were nice, knew how to set the sheets on fire, and the setup was believable. However, Ms. Thorn's writing didn't do it for me this time. There was too much info dump in the first chapter and too much (vanilla) sex scenes in the remaining ones, when she seemingly decided to ditch any attempt at storytelling and focused on sharing the intimate details of Sarah and Riley's thirty-six-hour wedding night with the readers. Hmmm, why am I complaining? *grins*

LawlessLawless by Emma Wildes

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was my first read by Ms. Wildes and I have to say it was a nice surprise. I really liked this sweet and romantic story about an outlaw who finds love and a new purpose in life in the arms of his unintended captive. Cal and Laurel fall in love with each other almost at first sight and that could have made me skeptic about their HEA, but Ms. Wildes made it work for me. That was quite a feat, considering this is a short story.

Here's "my" Cal:

Review: "Stolen by the Sheikh" by Marianne LaCroix

Stolen by the SheikhStolen by the Sheikh by Marianne LaCroix

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

The setting (Morocco, 1912) was interesting, but I'm sorry to say that it was the only thing I liked in this very short read.

The "hero" was an asshat, the "heroine" was a wimp, and the story, as simple as it was, had two of my great pet peeves in Romancelandia: the forced seduction scenario and the secret baby plot device. I knew beforehand that the story contained forced seduction scenes, but I was willing to give the book the benefit of the doubt because likable characters and a good setup could make me buy the whole enchilada. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. :( As for the secret baby plot line, I just couldn't understand why it had to be included in the book. It happened near the end of the story and added nothing to it, as there was simply no more pages left in the book to deal with the subject in a proper way.

At the end of the day, I can't even recommend this read for the smut, because that didn't work for me. I'm not a prude, as I've read many smut-ish, PWP books before and I'm certainly going to read that kind of book again. However, one thing has to happen for me to enjoy them: I need to like the characters. That isn't much to ask, is it?

Review: "Full House" by Carol Lynne

Full House (Poker Night, #5)Full House by Carol Lynne

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Poker Night series features a group of 6 gay men (Zac, Bobby, Trey, Angelo, Marco and Kent) who have been friends for almost 4 years and get together to play poker, drink beer and have fun every other Saturday. As the series starts, they're all single, but it's obvious that each of them is destined to find their HEA as the series progresses.

The 5th and final book in the series, Full House, is Marco and Kent's story and picks up a short time after Different Suits ended. I'd been waiting to read this book since I started the series, as it was obvious that Marco and Kent were destined to be together - I mean, all those barbs they kept throwing at each other could only mean true love, LOL -, and I'm glad to say I wasn't disappointed.

If you haven't read the previous books in the series, you might think that the romance between Marco and Kent is too sudden. That's why I highly recommend reading this series from the start, because the relationship between them doesn't start in this book. Also, you don't fully see how strained it was and how wrong Kent was about Marco if you aren't with them all along the journey.

In an interesting way, this story follows a template that's very similar to a "classic" HQ novel (with the exception that this is a M/M relationship, of course): 37-year-old, successful construction business owner Kent is 24-year-old, down-on-his-luck Marco's boss and, due to some misconceptions, treats the younger man like crap until he finally finds out how good, responsible and worthy Marco is; then, they fall in love, work their way through some conflicts and live HEA. I'm not complaining, as that template has proven to be successful through the years and I happen to like it.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book - and the whole series, for that matter - but Marco's age and background came as a surprise to me. Not a particularly nice one, as that was inconsistent with his behavior. Let me explain:

1. If he had such a hard time making ends meet and supporting his younger brothers and sister, how could he afford losing money in the bi-weekly poker nights with his friends?

2. Poker night has been going on since he was 20 years old, which means that his brother Bruno was only 13, his brother Nicky was only 11 and his sister Maria was only 6 when he left them alone at home to hang out with his friends.

That didn't make any sense, considering how responsible and protective Marco was when it came to his family. Anyway, that wasn't bad enough to ruin the book for me, because I loved everything else about it. :)

Review: "Different Suits" by Carol Lynne

Different Suits (Poker Night, #4)Different Suits by Carol Lynne

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Poker Night series features a group of 6 gay men (Zac, Bobby, Trey, Angelo, Marco and Kent) who have been friends for almost 4 years and get together to play poker, drink beer and have fun every other Saturday. As the series starts, they're all single, but it's obvious that each of them is destined to find their HEA as the series progresses.

The 4th book in the series, Different Suits, is Angelo's story and picks up about a month after Pocket Pair ended.

Angelo Pilato is the odd man out among the selected group of poker buddies. He's a successful radio station's sales manager, he's always well-dressed in expensive clothes, drives a Mercedes, owns a beautiful house and only drinks "that flavored pussy beer" (as his friends call the Mexican beer he favors). He isn't a snob, he's just determined to live a life as different as possible from the one he had while growing up as a poor boy.

Police Detective Juan "Moody" Torrence is nothing like the type of man Angelo finds interesting, and vice versa. He grew up in the same kind of neighborhood as Angelo's, but he isn't as obsessed with financial security as the other man. Angelo and Moody met in the previous book, when Moody was assigned to Trey's rape case, and butted heads right from the start. It was obvious that there was something going on there, but neither acted on it... until a homophobic reverend starts harassing Angelo and threatening his life. Moody is called to the rescue, and the rest is history...

Angelo has never been a favorite character of mine in the previous books in the series, but that isn't why I had problems with this book. The thing is, Angelo and Moody were complete opposites and didn't fit together. I like opposites-attract stories, but I need to feel that the H/H complement each other and that didn't happen here. The sexual chemistry was there, but not the love.

That said, this was still an OK read, saved by the secondary characters. I love those guys' friendship and how they're always there for each other, no matter what. I wish they were my friends. :)
